Sucking at remodeling but have to because I’m broke

  1. Painting Walls

My boyfriend and I did something adultish! We bought a townhouse! Super proud of us and super annoyed as well. Being a homeowner is hard, no matter if you live in a trailer or a mansion, you will always find something to remodel or renovate.

I don’t know if the previous owner was a vampire or simply liked dark colors but every room had either vomit brown walls, toxic purple, blood red and dark blue colors. I couldn’t wait to get the keys and start the renovation.

Oh, wait! We just put 13G down for downpayment and there is no way I can afford someone to repaint the whole house and re-do the cabinets. Like, thats another $5000-$6000.

So I did what I always do! Cried and ate ice cream and finished it up with some wine…….. It was amazing, but my new place still looked like shit.

So I started watching Youtube videos and realized, hey maybe I can do all this! All I need is some POP2K jam, a little Dave Ramsey podcast when I need some inspiration, wine and Home Depot…..I don’t wanna brag but I’m kinda a VIP at Home Depot now….Probably because I annoyed the crap out of the employees. I felt like Ariel in Little Mermaid when she called the fork dingglehoper. My vocabulary was full of, “thingy”, the “hitting thing” the “the white thing before you put the paint on” and many more.

If you are a true beginner, here are some tips before you start painting:

  1. Watch more than one how-to videos-the fact is everybody does everything a little different.
  2. Don’t be afraid to ask questions-Like I said, I annoyed the shit out of the employees, but they get people like me all the time and they have no problem explaining everything
  3. Primer-If you are going from dark color to light, you need a primer, the blue, red and purple color was very hard to get rid of and I needed good quality primer.
  4. Paint brushed and rollers– I learned it the hard way that they are not all the same. The surface of your wall needs to match the type of roller. They have Smooth, Semi-Smooth and Rough, if you don’t know take a picture of your wall and show it to the employee.
  5. Paint Type-I spent the most money on this one. The fact is I was workin my full time job, my boyfriend picked up extra shifts and I would come home and paint. The last thing I wanted to do is to paint the wall 2-3 times. So I bought the BEHR MARQUEE. It’s the most advanced one and one-coat is enough. Trust me it’s worth it.
  6. Painter’s Tape-I am clumsy as fuck. I put the tape at the top where the wall meets the ceiling and the bottom of the wall.. and guess what I still made some mistakes, but I would’ve made more without the tape. Also you can totally skip leg day at the gym that week because the up- the- ladder- down- the- ladder will take care of you. It’s a total HIIT class.
  7. Paint Sheen– The sheen is important, which is the finish of the paint and shows the amount of light it reflects. There is Flat, Matte, Eggshell Enamel, Satin Enamel, Semi-Gloss Enamel and Hi-Gloss Enamel. Again talk to an employee, they can help you decide.
  8. Color Picking-It is your choice. I follow Kat Von D on instagram and her whole house is red and dark colors. Looks amazing, not my style but it is totally her. We have a small townhouse and light colors make the place more open.

I did the whole house in about two weeks. The best part is I was super proud of myself and felt like a bad ass bitch. Also I saved about $3500, the labor cost went to me when I purchased a big ass cold margarita and taco at happy hour.

So, like I said, the struggle is real….the struggle is Dóra.
